Buccal Fat Pad Reduction
Buccal fat Pad reduction is a realtively new cosmetic facial procedure to the UK.
It is ideally suited to treatment of the fuller or 'chubby' face and can offer a sculpted look which accentuates natural cheek bone contour. It is sometimes known as 'bichectomy' after the doctor that first descibed the anatomy of the fat pad. In simple terms it involves removing a natural pad of fat within the cheeks which in some people is larger and makes the cheeks look fuller or chubby. Removing the fat causes no long term harm.
The surgery can be carried out either under local or general anaesthesia which you can discuss with your consultant. The operation involves only a small incision less than 10mm within the mouth and therefore causes no visible scarring and little time off your usual activities or work. The surgery is usually done as a day stay procedure.
The surgery should be carried out by an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon who will be very familiar and trained in operating within the mouth.
The procedure is not suited to all face shapes and some medical problems can make it unsuitable. This can be discussed at your consultation.
